My perspective today is informed by the countless others with whom I’ve worked over the years, among them clever, creative and, at times, really quite crazy writers, editors, art directors, photographers, even diplomats. I've asked quite a lot of questions along the way and paid particular mind to the craft of the writers, whether the Pulitzer prize-winning food critic or the curmudgeonly recluse who puts poetic utterances to paper via typewriter. As I contemplated how best to refine the thoughts and manners of expression of these artists, I myself learned immeasurable amounts.

During this time I came into my own as a writer and editor. I also came into my own as a teacher, creating an ad-hoc curriculum for aspiring entry-level staffers that essentially allowed them to learn as I had, which is to say, by doing. Many of my colleagues who participated in this writing and editing practicum are currently writers and editors in their own right at magazines and news-minded websites. I continue to coach others on their craft via more orthodox classes at MediaBistro.com and the James Beard award-winning LeitesCulinaria.com as well as personalized one-on-one mentoring sessions, both in person or over the phone. The focus can be anything you need. Conjuring ideas. Crafting transitions. Wooing an editor. Capturing your creativity in a recipe. Just about anything you can think to inquire, actually. All you have to do is ask.

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for your wonderful insights, kindness and generosity. I thought the class was fabulous.

"You are like a fairy tweet god mom."

Hearing your insights and perspectives really helped to bring the whole process down to earth and gave me good suggestions on how to approach publications. I had researched pitching articles online but it just seemed to be impossible for someone who does not have the traditional credentials. Thank you again. It was a pleasure to learn from you.

I just wanted to thank you for the great class last night. You were engaging and genuine, hard to do while on the phone with so many people! I've had quite an extensive tutorial on pitching in my magazine editing class last year, but you addressed many of the questions I've found cropping up now and again. I don't know you well, but the nature of your advice and your way of presenting yourself has already impressed me.

Renee is my favorite recipe-writing guru. She teaches the most wonderful lessons. Her help was invaluable.
